Allowing This Experience to Strengthen Myself!

Volunteer spotlight: Avery Boarts

Since November 2023 Avery has accumulated more than 46 hours of service because of her flexible home school schedule. This allows her to help with the Pillar School on Tuesday mornings, which we greatly appreciate. She’s also part of the Wednesday Dream Team assisting Instructors, Jen & Kathy Dermody.

What does this tall teen with five years of riding experience think of her time spent at Mane Stream?

“I chose to volunteer at Mane Stream because I wanted to expand my knowledge in the therapeutic equestrian field and connect with others. I love being involved in a program that's rewarding and helping people accomplish their goals during their time at Mane Stream. It is a great place to not only lend a helping hand to those who walk through the door but also a place where you can become a difference maker. I have had the chance to learn, help others, and allow this experience to strengthen myself.”

“One of the most rewarding stories I have had since volunteering was the time I helped a teenage girl gain confidence as a rider. I met her the first day she had gotten back in the saddle after taking a break from riding. She was afraid of how the horse would react. Would she be a good enough rider? And she was afraid of the idea of trotting again. As I continued to work with her and her instructor, she became more confident in herself and improved her riding skills. Afterward, every time she got on a horse, she would smile. She even conquered one of her fears, which was trotting on a horse! I was so proud of her and the time I spent with her made me smile, too.”

“I could also relate to what this rider was going through because I had a very similar experience. At one point in my life, I lost confidence in horseback riding, too. I thought I would never be able to overcome it, however I did. It was nice to work through something I had also experienced with this individual because it made both of us stronger.”

And finally, Avery wants everyone to know, “Mane Stream is a safe place; a place that makes everyone happy! I love this program and can't wait to see what comes next here at Mane Stream!”

Big thanks to Trainer, Jess Wentworth from White Pole Stables for suggesting that Avery should volunteer at Mane Stream!

I Can See that I Make a Difference!

Volunteer spotlight: Shannon Santoro

Shannon Santoro moved to New Jersey in 2022, just a few minutes away from Mane Stream. Every day on her way home, she noticed the “stunning” horses by the roadside and became captivated. Shannon imagined what it would be like to work at such a place. One day, she noticed a sign that read “Volunteers Needed” and decided to sign up since she met the age criteria.

In the past year, Shannon has learned much about our participants having volunteered with adaptive riding, Girl Scouts, camp, and therapy for a total of 74 hours so far. “Differences are a thing that should be celebrated, not singled out, and every human being deserves to be treated with the utmost respect, dignity, and kindness when you meet them, no matter what assumptions you may have made about that person.”

PATH Certified Instructor, Kelly Champion, has enjoyed seeing Shannon come out of her shell these past few months. “Shannon is now part of the team! And it really shows that she cares about the participants, horses, and volunteers alike.”

Shannon shared, “My favorite program is summer camp. I love getting to be a part of camp because of how many different kinds of people I get to interact with each week. There is also a fun variety of activities during camp. I also love watching the kids apply all of the different skills they learn throughout the week during the Friday horse show for the parents. I love seeing the proud smiles on all the kids’ faces at the end when they hold up their well-deserved certificates.”

When we asked Shannon who her favorite horse was she smiled and said, “Don (Donald), because he is such a gentle giant. He may look intimidating from afar due to his massive build and midnight brown coat but he is such a sweet and silly goofball once you get to know him.”

We asked Shannon what her most rewarding moment was she shared, “During the winter riding session at Woodpond Manor, I was granted the opportunity to work with a little ball of sunshine named Penelope. I still remember the session in which she not only remembered my name for the first time but pronounced it loudly and clearly. During a session that took place right around Valentine’s Day, Kelly placed paper hearts on the floor of the arena with questions on the other side. The rider was supposed to guide the horse over to a heart of their choosing and have the nearest volunteer pick it up for them and show them the question. One of the questions Penelope got was “Who is your favorite Mane Stream volunteer?” she said that I was, and that was just the most rewarding thing for me. It really helped me see that I do make a difference for people and everything I do is paying off.”

Thanks for being an important part of the team, Shannon!

Interesting Backgrounds Make for Versatile Volunteers

Volunteer spotlight: Wolfy Nicolaides

Just about 1 year ago Michael Nicolaides (a.k.a. Wolfy) joined the Mane Stream team. He lives close by AND has a flexible schedule, which makes him a perfect candidate for filling those last-minute spots.

When he moved to the area, he knew he wanted to give back to the community just like many of our volunteers. Wolfy shared, “I have always loved and wanted to work with horses, and when I learned of the amazing work that Mane Stream does, it sealed the deal! To be able to work with horses and help out with kids and adults who can really benefit from the programs offered, it was the perfect opportunity for me.”

When we asked Wolfy about the people he has met this past year he said, “I love working with everyone on the staff. They are so nice, knowledgeable, and patient and I've learned so much from all of them. The whole staff is also incredibly kind, and seeing them interact with the participants has really made every day I spend volunteering a great day.”

Wolfy’s favorite part of volunteering however is getting to know the participants. “They've taught me so much while working with them. It’s given me the chance to see how the kids handle and face different challenges. It’s difficult not to be inspired and proud of their ability to learn and thrive as they become more confident with each session or lesson. It’s tremendously rewarding to see as they progress from the first time sitting and walking on their horse to learning to post when they are trotting. They’ve shown me that no challenge is out of reach when you apply yourself.”  And while the participants are remarkable, Wolfy also mentioned, “Working with horses is incredible. It changes your spirit! Being outside, and working in the stable, all of it adds so much to my week. Being able to do both is so rewarding.”

Not only is Wolfy a dedicated program volunteer, we also found out that in a previous life, he was a fashion photographer, and is now helping out to capture all the magic that happens at Mane Stream. His next assignment is ensuring all the fun at Party in the Paddock on May 4th is documented! And if this volunteer isn’t diverse enough, Wolfy is also part owner of Molly’s Cupcakes and kindly provides delicious treats occasionally.

Thank you for choosing Mane Stream Wolfy!

Sister Duo says, “It’s an extra special experience!”

Volunteer spotlight: Laura Edelson and Karen Ricciardi

Sister Duo: Karen Ricciardi and Laura Edelson

Seasoned volunteer Laura Edelson is on her way to accumulating 2,200 volunteer hours, dedicating several days a week helping at Mane Stream. And she’s successfully encouraged her sister, Karen Ricciardi, to join the team. Laura shared, "My sister and I have always been close. When I started volunteering at Mane Stream in 2017, I couldn't stop talking about how rewarding it was. I knew she would love it too." Karen added, "After attending a Holiday Open House in 2018, I was hooked and asked if I could volunteer. I didn't want to step on her toes since she was already an established volunteer, but I love volunteering with my sister and at least I know I will get to see her once a week and we work really well together! Many participants mistake me for her, and Kelly, the instructor, even calls me Laura-Karen." Laura expressed, "Sharing stories with my sister, even when we're not in the same lesson, is fun. Volunteering together is an extra special experience, and I hope we can continue for many years to come!"

When Laura became an empty nester, she sought to volunteer and bond with animals. With a particular fondness for horses, Mane Stream appeared to be the perfect match. Laura expressed, "I love being able to come to the barn and commune with the horses, but the most rewarding part is witnessing the riders achieve their goals! It's truly incredible when a rider reaches a milestone. Volunteering at Mane Stream is also very therapeutic for me. I often refer to it as my therapy."

Karen's experience also echoes Laura's sentiments. Dealing with anxiety herself, she finds that working with the horses and participants has been a source of relief for her. She shared, "Initially, I was shy and apprehensive about handling the tack, but those feelings faded, and now I cherish the time I spend there. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I'm still working on mastering the correct way to attach the stirrups, but at least I can laugh about it. I also appreciate how volunteers form close bonds and friendships. It has truly made me feel like I belong to a team!"

Laura enthusiastically shared that her favorite program at Mane Stream is Horses for Healing. She cherishes the strong connections formed among participants, volunteers, and horses in this nurturing environment. Additionally, Laura finds fulfillment in volunteering for adaptive riding, where she witnesses the progress of each participant's unique riding journey.

Karen expressed her appreciation for various aspects of volunteering at Mane Stream. With just over 200 hours of service, she says she’s fortunate to work with great riding instructors and participants. Karen particularly values her time spent on Mondays, where she has developed a special bond with a participant. Together, they have achieved significant milestones, especially in the past year. Karen finds joy in making a positive impact, brightening their day, and sharing newfound skills with others.

What are the thoughts of the dynamic duo regarding the Mane Stream herd? Laura has formed bonds with various favorite horses over the years, such as Ian and Joe. Currently, she considers Tink her favorite, having ridden her during the Volunteer Class at the 2021 Horse Show. Describing Tink as a quarter horse, Laura's preferred breed, and a mare, she expresses her love for all the horses in the herd and cherishes the opportunity to care for these majestic animals. Karen shares, "Interacting with the horses is incredible; it uplifts your spirit. Engaging in stable work outdoors enriches my week significantly. It literally is the BEST part of my week! My favorite horse was Chandler, now a part of the Centenary University herd. We shared a special connection, and every visit, I would just hug him, a gesture he always welcomed. Right now, I make it a point to arrive a little early to spend time with each horse, to talk to them, and give them a little love before preparing the horse I am assigned to."

Karen eloquently finished by saying, “Volunteering at Mane Stream has given me the chance to see how the kids handle and face different challenges. It’s difficult not to be inspired and proud of their ability to learn and thrive as they become more confident as the sessions progress. It’s tremendously rewarding to see as they progress from the first time sitting and walking on their horse to learning to post when they are trotting. They’ve shown me that no challenge is out of reach when you apply yourself!”

We’re Happy, Chatty, and Relaxed on the Drive Home!

VOLUNTEER spotLIGHT: Debra & Bessie Huggins

Debra and Bessie Huggins’ riding instructor told them about Mane Stream back in early 2021 and Debra’s friend also volunteered here and thought it would be the perfect activity for them to do together.

Bessie shared, “One of the things I like about volunteering together with my mom is spending time with her, doing something that has structure. It’s also relevant to both of our lives because my mom has a PhD in special education, and we both like horses. Mane Stream has brought our relationship closer because of the long drive and the hours spent volunteering. It gives us something to talk about, that’s not school!”

Bessie’s mom, Debra, let us know, “When Bessie and I first started volunteering, Bessie was 14. Sometimes on the way up to the barn, Bessie would be on her phone, and quiet. I might get one-word answers. On the way home, it was completely different. There was something about volunteering at Mane Stream that made us both chatty, happy, and relaxed. There was something about sharing the experience of volunteering at Mane Stream - maybe it was the order and gentleness of the barn, our presence with the participants, the joy that they shared with us, the appreciation of their families - I’m not sure I can pinpoint why, but we always have the best conversations on the way home! Now, Bessie is 18, and our drives to the barn are fantastic - she is usually driving, and she is eager to talk about plans for the future, issues with school, etc… but what is unchanged is how happy, chatty, and relaxed we always are on the way home.”

Debra’s first big impression of Mane Stream was the Tack Room. “It’s so organized! I just walk in, and it makes me relax. It is one of the happy places that I think about when I need a minute.” One of her favorite memories is really more of a feeling than a memory. She eloquently stated, “It’s sweeping the hay loft on a fall evening when Bessie was with a participant, and I was done and dropping hay into a stall below. It was warm, cozy, and so still, and just feeling like I was a small part of something really special.”

In addition to volunteering for therapy sessions, Bessie has racked up a lot of hours volunteering with Summer Camp. She says she enjoys it because it has been a little different every summer helping to keep it fresh. She even learned how to make horse treats during camp, and she now makes them at home for her horse!

Thinking introspectively, Debra shared, “I think that volunteering at Mane Stream has helped me to see how good riding horses is for me. I notice that our participants are relaxed and happy after they ride, that they speak more clearly, that their movements are more organized, and that they are stronger and happier. And I realized that the exact same thing happens to me when I ride. There really is something about the outside of a horse that is very good for our participants, and for me too! I have learned so much about my own riding from volunteering with our participants.

Bessie mirrored her mother’s statement, “What I have learned the most about working with the special needs population is how beneficial riding a horse can be, and how life-changing therapy on a horse can be for the clients.  I also like that I can share my love of riding with people who cannot ride in a traditional setting. That’s cool!”

Over the years, I think I’ve come to appreciate how hard the horses work. When I first came I was like- “golly, the horses ONLY walk?” Now I understand how hard the horses work to attend and to stay calm when participants are upset, or when their movements aren’t organized. I understand that the horses care as much as we do- maybe more. It’s a powerful thing to see.

And finally, Debra happily exclaims, “Our relationship is so much CLOSER! I like that Bessie is definitely the barn expert at Mane Stream since she spends more time at the barn, and knows it better. That role reversal is really fun for me, and it makes me appreciate who she is as a leader and a young woman, not just my daughter. It makes me feel really proud of her.”

To this date, Debra has graciously volunteered 154 hours mostly in our Therapy Services side of the business while Bessie has accumulated 428 hours volunteering for Therapy and Summer Camp. We thank you both for driving the distance to ensure we have enough coverage for each therapy session and riding lesson!

My only regret is that I didn't start volunteering sooner!

Volunteer spotlight in his own words: Dana Rounsaville

Written by: Dana Rounsaville

I first became aware of Mane Stream when Karen (Board President) and Steve Kaufhold invited my wife and I to attend an Equus event approximately 12 years ago. When I saw the videos played at the event and the passion of the Mane Stream staff I decided then that it would be something I would like to be involved with. I realized that attending Equus and making a donation was not sufficient. I could do more.

Once I retired in 2022 the first thing I did was register for a Mane Stream orientation. I was looking to fill my free time; what I got in return was much more.  After almost 100 hours working with the clients and seeing the smiles on their faces, I find it so rewarding.  It really helps put things in perspective. I've been lucky to have so much in my life. When I see these young clients and parents and how they handle the hand that they've been dealt, it makes me appreciate even more how lucky I have been.

I can't say that one particular event has been more rewarding than another.  What is probably most rewarding is when a session ends and the client thanks you for helping.  I always tell them, "No, thank you for letting me assist.".

One of the other things I quickly noticed is the passion and friendliness of the staff and volunteers at Mane Stream.  Many travel a distance after work to fulfill their volunteer time slots but always have a smile on their face.  I've made a lot of new friends during my time here.

Working with the kids from the Pillar School is particularly rewarding. You can see how intimidated they are when they first arrive.  Gradually smiles come to their faces and before they leave they are hugging the horses.

I plan to continue volunteering and working with the clients for years to come. Seeing their smiles every day and having them thank me is so rewarding.  When my session ends, I immediately begin looking forward to my next session. My only regret is that I didn't start volunteering sooner.

In closing, I would strongly encourage others who can spare the time, to volunteer as well.  You get back 100 times more than you give!

Thank you for years of support and for joining the volunteering team as soon as you were able!
